The fact is that a colic baby is one which will cry for hours at a time, and which no amount of soothing will get to relax, shut up, and go off to sleep. The thing about colic babies is that it can be hard or impossible to soothe them. No one knows exactly what causes colic babies, and although there are some things that can be done to make them more at ease, a lot of the time, they provide little or no relief from the conditions. If you have colic babies, as I have, you often just have no solution other than to sit back and deal with it. What else are you going to do?
Colic is so widespread with infants and babies that many parents are not surprised anymore when it happens. Yet, for the first time parent it can be a horrible and panicking circumstance especially with her normally quiet infant screaming non-stop in the background. It is most often apparent at approximately three to four weeks of age. It becomes more notable in the first two months and subsides at about three months of age. Colic can totally stop at about three-and-a-half to four months of age.
Colic is actually not so hazardous. It might appear so though from the way babies would yell and bellow at the top of their lungs. In reality, it can be so common that parents may encounter an incident on a daily basis; and subsequently the first episode, parents generally learn to deal with latter ones with aplomb. However, physicians and scientists cannot pinpoint up until now just what exactly causes colicky infants. It just happens.
Sleep is the most important thing to think about when you have a colicky baby. This can also be the most difficult thing to accomplish, and the whole family suffers f the baby n the house won’t sleep.
Progesterone just happens to be one of the hormones that can have calming and sleep-inducing effects. A baby receives progesterone from the placenta at birth but the soothing effect from it generally wears off in about a week or two and it is also suggested that colic occurs if the infant does not produce enough progesterone on his own. In general, the studies surrounding this are mixed at best but they do indicate colic occurs less in breastfed infants because breastfed babies receive higher levels of progesterone.
