How to Handle a Baby with Colic
Having a baby with colic is physically and emotionally exhausting. When a parent has no way to comfort or bring relief to their child and must instead sit and listen to them cry for hours, it can be stressful, to say the least. One of the biggest challenges with colic is for the parents. It can be quite hard to handle a colicky baby.
A parent with a baby with colic needs to understand that their baby does not have colic because of something they did or did not do. Colic is not the parents fault and there is little or nothing they can do about it. Their child will grow out of it, but during the course of colic a parent has to learn about how to best handle the situation. One of the most important things for a parent to do is to get support. A parent needs someone they can talk to or someone to relieve them from time to time. When the crying episodes become too much a parent needs to be able to step away for a little bit to get themselves under control and calmed down. A parent who is all stressed or hyped up will only add to the babies problems.
Once a baby has been diagnosed with colic it is likely any other medical condition has been ruled out. A parent can rest assured that their baby is not being harmed by the colic. Instead they can try to find ways to sooth their child. A parent may find, though, that what works one time may not work the next.
All in all the best thing for a parent of a colicky baby to do is to stay positive. By keeping a positive light on things it makes it easier to stay calm and avoid getting run down by all the crying. It will also help the baby to know that their parent is doing fine and is not giving off a sense that something is wrong or that they are upset.
